Oh man... saving needs to happen here. Poor Renault. Lunch today will consist of a burger, fries, and a pickle. Nothing too interesting, I will be in pizza heaven the next 2 lunches.

my parents had a Renault like that (5 GT Turbo) when I was born. They said it was a rocket and would scream down the autobahn like nothing else back then. They also said it was the most unreliable car they ever owned.

I haven't seen one of those in yeeeaaars. All of the stuff I remember from back in the day is gone. :(

I had one of them back in the 90s, and it was great fun, I've been kicking myself for selling it ever since. Seriously fricking quick for the day, and that "wheeeeeEEEE - SLAM" sensation of a big turbo on a small engine spooling up at about 3000rpm never gets old. Handling was fantastically darty - not as delicate as a 205GTI (which a friend had at the same time) but more planted, and the lift-off oversteer was less snappy.

And the reliability, as I recall, wasn't too hideous. Apart from trim dropping off because they're made of tinfoil and sweet wrappers. And a huge appetite for clutch cables, to the point where I was getting them changed each service as a precaution and carrying a spare in the boot in case it didn't make it to the next service. I believe that was only a RHD problem though.

my parents said their biggest problem with it was fuel pump. I guess it used two fuel pumps and the glue on them was easily corroded by the gas in the tank. They said their spent more time on a flatbed than on the road... Theirs was a 1985 model (I think)'because I was born in 1987 and it was still quite new.

As my dad said: "it ran like a scolded dog...when it ran."
